I applied to Buckeye to become a part time, Uniform Security Guard. Bethann, and Sonny (the scheduling officers) seemed like nice, generous, and overall good people to work for. They even gave me two new white uniform shirts as a promise that they would have work for me.
During the time of my hiring, the Football Hall of Fame was beginning its enshrinement ceremony, and Buckeye is their security provider. So my first job with them was at the Hall of Fame, and they loaned me a bright green shirt. They had a limited amount of neon green shirts, so they only issued me one.
The first day of the job went fine, I worked for twelve hours (guarding a vacant lot) and then right on time, my relief showed up. The second day, they had me guarding a different lot and I was scheduled for nine hours. After thirteen hours, I was still standing there, attempting to get in touch with Bethann who was not answering her cell phone. On the third day, I got to my post at five in the morning, was scheduled to leave at two, but after a scorching hot fifteen hours, I was still standing there, and finally walked off the post at eight. I worked for an additional two days, and over the course of five days had accrued fifty-seven hours.
Stupid me, still thought I was working for a reliable company and would exhaust my water reserves during my regular shift hours, and they wouldn't allow me to leave the post to get more. Bethann would occasionally drive around in a golf cart and hand out water, but on multiple occasions, she would drive right past me. One time I even called her over to get water, and she stopped, mouth the words "I don't want to deal with you, " and drove away. It got the point where I was relying on the kindness of the construction workers and maintenance crew to give me water.
In the weeks after the Hall of fame, I had to call Bethann numerous times and left her many messages, before I was able to talk to her about my next post. I went back to Buckeye to return the green uniform shirt and submit my hours. Sonny examined the shirt (which I HAD to wear for five days) and said that it wasn't clean enough and that I ruined it, so they were going to deduct $14.00 out of my pay. That was fine by me, because he gave me the shirt to keep, for their next special event.
I eventually tired of calling Bethann and began seeking more substantial employment. Then, out of nowhere she called me, while I was outside and couldn't get the phone. She didn't leave a message, so I didn't know she called me. The next day she called me again, and left me a message of white noise before she hung up. About an hour latter, while I was still elsewhere she finally left a message about having work for me, but because I wouldn't answer the phone, she had to assign another guard to the post. She also claimed to need my school schedule, so she knew when I could be posted.
I walked into Buckeye, and Sonny immediately said "O, heres the guy who you can't get in touch with."
I attempt to give Bethann my schedule (which I had given her twice before), and she just said, "I don't want to talk to you. If you don't want to work, then thats your problem."
After over a week, I had not heard word one from Buckeye, so I E-mailed my letter of resignation to Bethann. Then Sonny called me on my cellphone (which is always plugged into my car charger) at eight thirty and demanded I bring his uniforms back. Unfortunately, I don't check my cellphone for new calls and messages, so I didn't receive Sonny's demand until after Buckeye was closed for the day. The very next day (at seven in the morning), the general manager of Buckeye Protective Services was pounding on my back door saying that if I didn't return their two uniform shirts, he was going to call the police.
Buckeye ripped me off the time that I could have spent getting a better job. Sure I got $430.00 from the Hall of Fame event, but I made $570.00, and over half of the deductions went to Buckeye (for my "free" training coarse, Ohio security officer registration fee, and the green uniform I apparently ruined). The employees of Buckeye were getting their family members to work shifts at the Hall of Fame, and Buckeye was just handing them a shirt and telling them where to stand. If thats basically what they did to me, then how come I had to pay $50.00 for the privilege?
