I was contacted by Family Readers Club who offered to renew subscriptions to magazines I was already receiving. The offer was very ambiguous and I (in my ignorance) agreed. The terms of the offer seemed to offer a one-time fee of $49.95.instead, I was charged $49.95 per month. When I tried to cancel, I was informed that I was not able to do so.
After they continued to charge my debit card for several months, I notified them in writing that I was cancelling my subscription and that there were not authorized to debit my account any longer. They continued to do so. I eventually disputed the charges and closed the account.
They are now calling now and threatening to "prosecute me to the fullest extent allowed by law". I have asked for a copy of my "contract" and for them to show me where it says I cannot cancel and that I owe any sort of penalty.
I spoke to Mr. Harper at FRC. He informed me that he would not do so because I was rude to him when we spoke on the phone (in the interest of full disclosure, I should admit that I hung up on him when we did speak on the phone and he continually told me that I could not cancel eventhough the admitted that they had received my written notice to cancel).
They have sent me a written offer to "settle" the "debt" for $525 (they claim that I owe them something like $750).
At this point, I am planning on doing nothing and monitoring my credit report and disputing any negative filing.
