Universal Gas & Electric representatives solicited my neighborhood. They said they could offer substantial savings to my gas bill and asked to see my previous bill from Consumers Energy.
They then said if I was interested in saving money to sign up on the paper they had on their clip board and information would be sent to me.
I complained to a neighbor that even though I was on a budget plan, the amount was raised on my gas bill, and it was much higher than other in the same complex. Others on a budget plan were getting a month or two credit. I didn't understand why my budget plan was increasing. I keep my heat low in the winter and try not to use the air in the summer.
I finally called Universal Gas & Electric. They told me if I wanted to cancel, it would need to be in writing and to include my birthdate and other personal information on the letter.
I then received a response on June 17 stating that they received my request to cancel but they have procured natural gas supply for a 5-year term on my behalf when I reaffirmed the "contract" on April 17. I did not re-affirm or sign any contract to my knowledge. The letter then stated that I could only cancel if I paid an "Early Termination Charge" of $250.00 and to sdend out a check or money order.
If I don't pay them $250.00 I am locked into paying additional fees on my gas bill. This seems illegal to me. I live on a fixed income and am unable to pay this so called fee. My neighbor showed me how much Consumers Energy was charging per month (which was what I was paying before Universal signed me up for a so-called savings.) On the bill I am also being charged an additional charge to MY CHOICE ENERGY that is described as a total supplier cost.
I would like to report this fraudulence and ask for help to discontinue this supplier cost service.
Thank you
