I went to this law firm that advertises on all the billboards and bus stops, they show a picture of someone who looks like granpa munster of the munsters as the lead lawyer, they advertise free consultations in immigration law. I arrived and was told that the consultation was not a legal consultation then I asked what is a legal consultation then, I was told $100 for that, then there is no free consultation-clearly the first sign of a rippoff, but I was stupid and wanted to hear what I wanted, I went to several good attorneys before and they told me that I could not be helped, I should have listened.
I am a cuban and had a felony conviction, the other lawyers said that I should just accept any deportation order and give up my green card. The billboard lawyer said he could help, and charged me $4,500 for the deporation case and to change my felony conviction, the contract said if he did not change the conviction I would get a refund of 2,500. I went to immigration court with him and he filed for asylum for me, I told him that I was not afraid to return to cuba and that I was not political, he said we should file anyway and that he would win the case.
I lost the case, he then told me it would be another $2,500 for the appeal, he said he would win the appeal, he put the extra amount on the original contract without my signature, like an amendment. I paid and lost again in seven months. I went back and he told me that I needed to file an appeal to the federal court in san fransisco. He told me that that would be $8,500, he wrote it down again as an amendment on the contract without my signature. I told him no and that I had found out that as a cuban the INS could not send me back and that all the appeals and fighting just wasted my money. He laughed and threw me out of the office.
Three years later I received a demand for payment from a credit agency, they said that I owed this billboard lawyer $9,700 for an appeal to the federal court in san fransisco, and for proof they should me the line that was written on my orginal contract, but it did not have my signature, only the orginal signature from the first case. I could not believe this was happening, this billboard lawyer had filed the appeal without my agreement or knowledge, and now was trying to get me to pay, the credit agency threatened to ruin my credit, why was this happening to me. I lost all the case, and know was being forced to pay for something I did not agree to.
BE AWARE AND UNDERSTAND NOTHING IS FREE-A FREE CONSULTATION CAN COST YOU THOUSANDS, DO NOT BE RIPPED OFF BY ANY BILLBOARD LAWYER IN IMMIGRATION LAW,
Sadly I now know what the truth is, I should have listened to the real lawyers and would now be alot wiser and riche
