I answered an ad in the local newspaper about an opening for a position in Customer Service. The ad mentioned set your own hours, paid training, benefits, a relaxed office environment, and the possibility of making up to $18 per hour (average $9.00). So I called the number and set up an interview.
I went into the interview, got dressed up, and spoke with one of the managers. While I was waiting, I filled out the application for the job as a 'pub rep'. The manager reviewed my application, asked me some personal questions, and had me read a script. I was told my interview was 'good'. Lastly, I had to take a paper-and-pencil type test about my personality. I was also told to call back the next morning to go over the results.
I called the next morning and the person who answered said I did 'very well' on my assessment and I was hired. I accepted. I was told by this person to come in next Monday to fill out the payroll paperwork. I had to bring my SS card and driver's license. I was told that training was Tuesday through Friday from 9-4 and I would be paid minumum wage plus an extra 65 cents per hour as a 'learning bonus'.
I arrived the next morning for training and was handed a folder. Myself and about 8 others were in training. They basically told you b/s and you had to teach yourself the stuff. We got on the phone and called people for subscriptions. I had no idea we would be selling stuff. I made 5 sales the whole time I was there. We were not paid for breaks.
Finally, that Friday, the manager called me into her office to do a tape review. I was also asked if I think I want to stay or not. I said that the past few days had given me a lot of doubts and rather than waste my time or theirs, I would be glad to leave. So the manager told me I could stay until lunch or leave now. So, I left. I was told I would be paid for the time I put in. They told to call in one week (payday is every other Friday) around 1 PM to see about having my check mailed to me. I called and they said it was on its way. It is now Tuesday of the following week and I still didn't have it. If it isn't here by this time tomorrow, I am calling them up and raising hell.
