Racist treatment by Loss Prevention

My letter to Bj's

Re: Unfair treatment of Customers

I would like to bring a recent experience I had in a BJ's in Tampa, FL on Waters Ave to your immediate attention. I have had the pleasure of visiting many BJ's around the US and I have been a patron of BJ's for some time now. I have never been asked to show my card at the door at any locations until recently. The Waters location asked to see a membership card when entering the store, which is a practice they do at times and at times they do not.

Today, I asked the lady at the door why they do not do it at other BJ's, she stated, "It is just the policy of management at this store." I shopped, and when I went to check out I asked to speak with the manager. I asked the manager why this is this store's policy. The manager stated, "We have a problem with theft at this location, so we ask to see the member's cards.' I informed the manager that this is an unfair practice and that I was offended. I also informed him that I would write a formal complaint.

When shopping at other wholesale clubs, they card every member, at every location, and I have no problem with that. However, I have a problem with BJ's choosing to card members in certain neighborhoods, because they lack the ability to control a theft problem, and not in other neighborhoods that are perceived to be better. I informed the manager that he should discuss the issue and suggest making a policy to card everyone or card no one in order to be fair and prevent being sued.

I would like a response to this letter and an update of your policy within a month. If this policy is not changed I will write local newspapers and news stations, alarm the community of these practices and file suit. I feel strongly about this matter as well as some other members, and we are asking politely for it to be addressed.

Sincerely,
Renee XXXX

Dear rene xxxx,

Wanted to let you know the GM have discussed this issue with the Regional Manager. Their reply was, "We will continue to check cards at the door As instructed by corporate loss prevention. We do so as we are located next to a bus line. We keep non members out of the store for safety and security reasons. We have done so since opening."

Sincerely,
ALETHA F.
