Well, it all begins when I had to acquire moving (with storage for one month), I did some research and got many quotes (from moving companies and storage facilities). I decided on Globe Van Lines b/c they quoted me $500 (since it was a local move) with one free month of storage.
At the time, I couldn't take into account the $190 storage "handling" fee, which they neglected to mention when I received my quote and not until they already had my belongings in my possession.
When they came to deliver my personal items, my bill was so padded I could probably have replaced my mattress with it and gotten a better night's rest. I was charged for things ranging from the non-existent packing materials they used, to excess storage/weight, and handling fees. My bill went from being only $500 to a whopping $2500 and they said I wouldn't get my belongings until I paid in full, and they would only accept cash before the truck was unloaded.
I did some calculating and if I had just hired another company to deliver my belongings to storage and paid for the storage, then hired them again to deliver my belongings to my new address, the total cost would have been under $1,000 (I was using previous, total bill of lading/sales from the other movers I used and the quotes I obtained from the storage facilities).
When I tried to argue against this price, I was told that it was too bad and reminded that they were the ones with my stuff, so if I ever wanted to see it again, I'd just have to pay. Well, needless to say, I wanted to see my stuff again, so I paid it.
When they unloaded my belongings, the damage seemed never-ending... My boyfriend had to hold me as I cried looking at all my stuff! Over $1,000 worth of damage, but I only filed a claim with the company for $630, you think I have heard any word from them?!? Nope, the last recourse I have is the BBB and small claims court.
In total, I have had to deal with, rude customer service, having my belongings held hostage, listening to shrewd comments such as "why isn't your boyfriend helping you with this move? If I had a girl as sexy as you..." and "I would love to... (use your imagination to fill in the rest)" and various other sexually harrasing statments... And what do you think all this cost me?!? Only $3,500 plus some other minor expenses... For that price, one might think I was moving clear across the country, but nope, I was only moving about 10 blocks!
