I am so devastated. I have a beautiful eight month old chow puppy. I took her into Petsmart to have her hair cut for the summer. The girl asked me if I wanted her shaved and I specifically said do not shave her but cut the hair on her body short and leave around her face longer like a mane but trim it as well.
I even showed her the length I wanted it on a swatch that they had. It was about 2 1/2 inches long maybe a little more. My puppy had a whole lot of hair and the weather is warming up and she's shedding her winter coat so i wanted her trimmed down so she would be great for summer. I didn't want her cut any different than how she was already cut just shorter.
When i went to pick her up the girl had shaved her bodya and back legs completely bald! She cut her hair all the way down to the skin! I specifically told her i didn't want her shaved. I went home and read on the internet that it's not recommended to shave chows because it can cause skin problems and cause them to have problems regulating there body temperature.
Even if I had said I wanted my Chow shaved as professional groomers you would think they would have told me about all the potential hazards with shaving a Chow. Of course i didn't ask for her to be shaved and as a matter of fact when I said I wanted her hair cut the girl asked if my husband and I wanted her shaved. She is the only one who brought up shaving and I most definitely told her no!
After having my puppy home for an hour I noticed that her head had blood on it. I never did figure out where the blood came from, but I did take her back to Petsmart and they could not figure it out either. They did refund my money and agreed that it looked terrible and said themselves that it's not a good idea to shave chows. Two of the employees at this particular Petsmart did apologize for the haircut and the fact that my puppy was supposed to have her nails clipped and they were not done and the unexplained mystery blood on her head probably from a knick somewhere. The girl left the hair on her head and front legs long like it was and it was cut really uneven.
I haven't had a chance to upload any before and after shots but i assure you it is really bad. I have never seen a Chow with a haircut like this and am not really sure why the girl deliberately went against my request to not shave my puppy and to do a haircut that potentially has so many negative affects.
I am taking my puppy to the vet and expect Petsmart to cover the costs. I have to have proof that my dog is healthy and has no skin problems in case some problems develop from this shave and do not feel that I should have to pay for it since they are the reason why all of this is happening.
Like I said they did apologize and as a business owner myself I am certainly not trying to be unreasonable. It's not an issue of money but the fact that my puppy could have problems from this in the future and that she looks horrible and will for many months until her coat grows back. I would recommend not going to the Petsmart on East State St.in Rockford. They either have no idea of what they are doing, have really bad listening skills, just don't give a damn about your pet or their job or all of the above.
Beware of Petsmart grooming in Rockford Illinois! It is so sad what they did to my baby: (
