On occasion I have returned items to Target without a receipt and received a gift card with the amount of the item to purchase something else. This is usually the process at other department stores as well. However on this visit to Target I did not have the receipt and needed to return a shower head that was poorly made. The cashier asked if I payed with credit card or check but we payed with cash for the item. She then proceeded to say that I could not return it. I stated can't you just give me a gift card and I will get something else? She stated that I would have to purchase something in the same department. I objected and stated that is not specified on their return policy! I then asked for a manager and complained to the manager who also offered no solution. I did not believe the person was actually a manager her title was lead something. None the less I was upset. I proceeded home and got the receipt and returned to get my cash back for the item rather than purchase something else while I was there.

Target did not value me as a returning customer who would exchange the item for something else. I did not need anything else in the hardware department but I did need items for my kids. I would have spent more money than the amount spent on the shower head!

The number one problem is that as a consumer you read the rules and return policies and then you return something and get another story or policy entirely! They make up arbitrary rules! If that is the policy they need to post and publish it so the consumer can decide if they want to shop at their stores with those ridiculous policies. The money is still collected by Target regardless of the department. And what is the difference if I have the receipt or not? I mean if I have the receipt and want to exchange for something else I can but if I don't have receipt I have to get the same department? It makes no sense. Plus-why isn't this policy posted?!?!!?

Instead of giving me a voucher for more merchandise, I decided to get my money and not return to Target-EVER. I have told friends as well of this arbitrary and made up policy and suggested they shop at Wal-Mart or elsewhere.

Maybe some Target stores make up this policy and some don't-none the less I will not shop at Target any more! Wal-Mart has never hassled me about returns and even though I do not agree with Wal-Mart's labor relations, I appreciate how they treat me as a customer! I never shopped at Target much anyway-now I will not shop there at all!
