Charge $200 early termination fee but 1 yr contract period fulfilled, inconsistency answer from customer representatives

Nextel refused to take away the early termination fee $200 but I had fulfilled the one year contract period. They insisted my contract is two years in their system. They asked me to provide contract, shouldn't they should have a copy? I kept all contract and phone purchase recipt with a one year time stamp on it. I'm filing it to the government agency. The customer representative's answers were inconsistent when I called different time and in email as well.

My friend has the same problem since we signed the contract and cancelled it at the same period. He owed them two months phone service charge as well but they took away the termination fee and just asked for those two months charge by collection agency. He paid those two months charge. Therefore, Nextel treated the case varied by customer. Their system definitely has problem.
We both switched to another company, so far their document communication and customer service are pretty good. No hidden charge or trap.
