Denny Rudd, owner of One-hour Martinizing Dry Cleaning, claimed no respomnsibility in the destruction of my beautiful glossy black leather opera gloves. I had bought these one-of-a-kind gloves at Bergdorf Goodman's in NYC in after winning a the national Dancesport Professional Title. It was my $250 congratulations gift to myself!
The gloves WERE 24" long, soft, shiny, lined with silk, and had three black mother-of-pearl buttons on each at the wrist. This was the first time I was to have them cleaned. They came back 22 1/2" long, with frayed, unpressed edges, sticky, dull, and every button was either broken or missing.
After giving up the argument that "they came in that way, " Mr. Rudd agreed to have them cleaned again at no charge, press the edges, and replace the buttons with a "like quality" replacement.
The second time I picked up the gloves, the buttons had been replaced with cheap black plastic buttons that were too big for the buttonholes. Nothing had been done to the edges or to the finish. I told Mr. Rudd that he could have them, and wanted compensation, but he rudely refused. Not only that, but on both occaisions, I saw personal clients of mine in the store—both clients expressing the opinion publicly that they thought the gloves had been washed in a washing machine.
When I tried to order a new pair at Bergdorf's, they told me that 2000 was the only year they made these gloves. I have searched Florida, NYC, and EBay, and have not found a similar pair. I would like compensation from this unprofessional man in the amount of $250, so I can purchase new gloves, should I ever find them!
