Well we started out with the usual calling for a reservation of a trailer and not getting a call back to let us know they have one. We had to call but since the original call was done locally we had to call locally to inquire.
The corporate 800# has no idea what the local reservations are.
We began our fun by renting from the Hamtramck location in MI. They spent 1/2 hr trying to hook up a trailer to my vechile. Glad they finished but with zero confidence it was right I went to another location to have it checked. Of course it was hooked up completely wrong. We loaded up the truck and began our journey to Chicago. About 30 miles out found that the trailer brakes were engaging and pulling against our vehicle. We pulled over and called Uhaul service. They came out about 1/2 hr later and told us everything seemed to be fine. "You might need to apply the brakes and jolt it".
We completed our drive, unloaded and loaded the trailer.
Next day we drove the empty trailer to a store to buy and haul a couch. On the way the trailer decided to come detached, sway back and forth and then proceed to hit the back of our vehicle 3 times. The safety brake on the trailer did not engage. We pulled to the side of the road and called Uhaul again. They said that they will send a tow truck to get the trailer. While waiting we decided we might need a police report for our vehicle damage. The police showed up in minutes.
The police took a long time and then proceeded to tell me that the trailer has been reported STOLEN and that they need to take me into custody. Luckily within a few minutes of that the Uhaul tow truck showed up and confirmed that I did have a reservation and that we called them for help.
Then had to go to the police station so they could try and call corporate for more details. The police officer was still not completely convinced that we didn't steal it. It seems the real problem is that if a rental is not returned on the date expected then the Uhaul location reports it stolen to the police, however when it is finally turned back in they don't release the stolen report.
The fun continues in that the Uhaul location charged us overtime charges for turning in the trailer late when in fact we turned it in a day and a half early. We had to rent an Enterprise van in order to finish our moving project and pay an extra $50.
We are in the process of trying to get all our money back for our troubles, near imprisionment and injuries.
We spend our days dealing with all the different groups you have to speak with.initial issues with your pick up location, the misbilling with the drop off location and the insurance issues with Republic Claims. Oh and the vehicle damage with our own insurance company.
Sorry for everyone elses trouble but glad to know we are not alone. Wish we read this site prior to renting.
