Ridiculous Uhaul Experience

Uhual “Your moving and storage resource” quickly became a moving nightmare! Moving from Ottawa to Vancouver shouldn’t be that hard, but stresses seemed to pop up on a regular basis once Uhaul became involved. On September 2nd I had an appointment at the Uhaul location in Ottawa to get my trailer hitch wired and to pick up the 8”x 5” trailer I would be pulling across Canada. My appointment was at 3:30 pm which I made a week in advance. This appointment took 4 hours! At 7:30 I was finally on the road with the trailer. This location is so disorganized and the employees are not helpful. I had to regularly remind the staff that I had an appointment and that my car needed to wired. My car was not pulled into the garage until 5:30pm, two hours after my 3:30 pm appointment.

After loading up the trailer with all of my personal items we began our trip across Canada. The first day it rained hard for most of the drive, which was about 12 hours long. The following day we continued driving and we did drive through some rain for a few hours. When we stopped at a gas station we decided to check the trailer and the contents inside. When we opened the trailer we were shocked to see all of the interior contents were soaking wet! The grease from the interior of the trailer had coated the contents as well. Everything from books, bedding, electronics and personal items were damaged beyond repair. At this time we had to spend about 4 hours removing all of the contents from the trailer and either attempt to dry them or throw them out. We contacted Uhaul at this time for advice on what to do and we were told to just call back on Monday and file a claim since I had purchased insurance with Uhaul.

We had to spend an extra night at a hotel due to the problems with the leaking trailer. We decided to purchase tarps and duck taped them to the trailer to prevent any further leaks from occurring.

Once we arrived in Vancouver we unloaded the trailer and returned it to Uhaul. At the time of return we advised the staff of the problems with the trailer. They said that the insurance would cover any damages to personal items. A claim was filed and we thought the insurance that was purchased for over $100 would cover damages.

The insurance claim was declined because the trailers are not water proof only water resistant. The insurance does not cover water damage. The amount of water that entered the trailer should not be acceptable when providing a moving service. It should be common sense that the service and product purchased from Uhaul would keep your items safe and undamaged? The amount of water that entered the trailer was unacceptable!

At this point I would be happy with a refund for the amount of the insurance and the rental because I feel the services that I purchased were not provided.
