Ripoff report seems to have some misconception of the BBB 's policies and practices. I continually see statements posted on your website such as "Remember, BBB memberships are purchased, not earned." I have been a BBB employee for over 20 years, and I assure you nothing could be farther from the truth. Each company who applies for membership must go through a screening process.
They must have obtained any license necessary for their indusrtry, they must have any and all unanswered or unresolved complaints addressed, generally no government actions, or other law enforement activity, be willing and able to substanciate any advertising claims, etc...
There are some companies who lie in order to be approved by changing the name of the owner, or not disclosing the true nature of business, but when discovered they are suspended. We have log books of rejected applications for membership, and suspended memberships. The BBB really does have standards of membership and requirements to adhere to these standards. I am writing this on a personal basis, not on behalf of the BBB, but because I'm proud to work for the BBB, and I feel insulted when I see such a opinionated distortion of the facts. It's really too bad that with a similar common goal, your organisation is so hostile. Best Wishes for the Holiday!
