In 1992 I started receiving AFDC for my unborn child. At that time I was still a minor. I lived with my mother on and off during my pregnancy and after my child was born. During that duration before I turned 18 my mother received child support for myself.
I reported to D.E.S. My mother was receiving child support for me, and kept the money even though I did not live in the home. They told me I would have to tell her to turn it over to AFDC, so I could continue receiving my AFDC. I told my mother this information. However she refused to turn in the money.
AFDC was suppose to modify my checks, which were only $275 a month. This did not happen and I continued to receive the $275 a month. One year passed by before they caught their mistake. Although this was their mistake, they told me I was responsible for the money.
Months went by before I confronted D.E.S. That I felt it was my mother's responsiblity for the reimbursement. They told me the grace period had pass and I could no longer dipute the issue. Because I lacked the maturity and the knowledge, I paid over $2,000 back to D.E.S.
D.E.S. Had taken advantage of the situation, as well as my mother. I was left in the middle to figure all of this mishappening for myself, which I was not legally responsible for in the first place because I was a minor. I am now a responsible, productive citizen and a whole lot smarter now.
