Hello Everyone,
I had a very bad experience ordering a certified birth certificate from a company called VitalChek. On February 25th which was over two weeks ago, I searched the web looking for a way to order a birth certificate quickly. I had a plane ticket to go to Cancun, Mexico on March 14th, and I figured that 2 1/2 weeks would be plenty of time for me to receive my order. I found New York State Vital Records, and ordered my birth certificate through VitalChek who is contracted with them. I paid $69.95 total for the birth certificate and the next day delivery service.
It is now March 11th and I still have no birth certificate. I was informed by United Airlines that a Certified Birth Certificate or Passport is necessary to travel to Mexico. If the order does not ship out today, I am going to have to change my flight dates which is going to cost me a minimum of $100.00, plus the hassle of rescheduling my time off from work, and redoing my hotel reservations. VitalChek's customer service center was no help to me, and their e-mail support center has not responded to the e-mail I sent them 2 days ago.
If you need to order a birth certificate, call your Town Clerk's office. I called them today (in Tonawanda, New York), and they only charge only $10.00 for a certified birth certificate, and they send out the birth certificate the same day they receive them! Of course I found this out too late.
This was a very expensive lesson for me. Hopefully some good will come out of this, and some of you can save yourself some grief from my experience.
