Goodwill Industries
Abusive Employers with Unethical Tactics

If the company you're applying for is constantly hiring, there's a hidden reason that the employee turnover is high. With the Goodwill Industries there is more than one reason.

They offer no stability to their employees when it comes to hours. One week you are working 25 hours and then next 16 hours.in light of the current economy this is not a good place for an employee to be.

Those employeed by Goodwill Corporate consistently force their employees to produce unreasonal amounts of donated items. Production is the name of the game. Keep in mind that production at Goodwill is not the same as production at your local Walmart. Goodwill items come into the store through the back door or a donation center. They are then thrown into large black bins with wheels known as hoppers for hard items and large blue bins with wheels known as containers. Hoppers and containers are then placed in the back room where the employee working the back needs to sort the items. This is a dangerous and dirty game. Hoppers are often full of sharp metals and broken glass. Unidentified liquids, used bandaids and santary pads as some donators use Goodwill as a place to discard garbage.

Employees now have a limited time to sort through (need to watch the budgeted payroll hours). This makes the game more dangerous as there is not time to be careful when sorting as the days posted quotas need to be met without question. If the quotas are not met by the employee then verbal, written and termination action is then taken.

In example; a large container of clothing needs to be sorted by a hanger. This employee is responsible for sorting through soiled dirty clothing to pull good clothing, focusing on name brands such as Ralph Lauren and Talbots (they price these textiles up). They then need to hang 100 items per hanging rack, tag each of the one 100 items per rack, price each one of the items per rack, to then place the items on the sales floor in the proper place, either by color, style etc. Etc. They are to do this in one hour! Sort, hang, tag, price and put away on the floor. One rack an hour. If this is not met then action is taken against the empoyee.

Moving onto the sorted soiled not to be saved clothing. This clothing is packaged up, sold and sent to third world countries. Added to this are the end of the week sales colour. If the sales colour of the week is clear at the end of that week ALL clothing and shoes are pulled, packaged up and sold to third world countries instead of being used right here in our own country where they can be sent to Homeless Shelters, Women and Children Shelters, the American Red Cross in the event of emergencies and disasters, or even local churches for families in need. That would be the Goodwill thing to do (how Ironic that word is), instead they choose to make more money by selling the donated products outside of our own country with a failing economy.

Goodwill can say that they are helping the disabled. Maybe so, but they do so by disabeling their employees both emotionally and physically. Corporate Goodwill often works their employees to the bone or communicates to their employees in a degrading fashion to include those that are disabled.

Many often complain of high prices. The production employee is often blamed by the customer that they are pricing too high or need to be trained in pricing as I have read on here. It is not the employee in production. It is Goodwill Corporate as they set the price lists that are distributed throughout the stores. Each production employee are required to utilize that price list. If it is a name brand regardless that the item is used that item is priced high. Used coffee mugs are priced at. 99 some higher, well consumers you can buy a new mug in Dollar Tree for $1.00. This goes the same for "New Goods" at Goodwill where price points are higher than Dxxxr Txxx (REDACATED) for the same item.

I cannot speak for every Goodwill across the Country as each is different and run by different Corporate Offices, but I can speak for South West, Florida.

As for the prior manager that posted, you are correct in what you have written.

When it comes to Goodwill South West Florida, what you see on the outside in their LOGO is not what you get on the inside. It has an "UCKY" middle as my young child would say.

Think twice before you donate. With these hard economic times there are many in this country in need. Put your donations to where they are needed most. To where people both employeed and in need are taken care of.

Sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company your comments on this policy are welcome!
