I received a quote of $240 to complete a simple move from one apartment to a small house 4 miles away. Without providing any documentation to sign, the movers wrapped my furniture and boxes us with extra padding and tape (great, right?). Upon arriving at my new place, however, my bill had ballooned up to an even $1000 - the extra $760 came from use of their bubble wrap and tape. We never signed any paperwork agreeing to the extra packing other than with our TV. Everything else was done without our consent.
Reviewing the CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) docmument "Maximum Rates Tariff 4", the movers were acting illegally in many different manners - from not providing us with a copy of the Important Information for Persons Moving Household Goods booklet (listed in Item 88, paragraph 9), to improperly charging for packaging materials which cannot be charged as separate items (according to paragraph 1 of Item 340).
I plan on filing a complaint with the CMSA (California Moving and Storage Association) and CPUC.
