Consumer Report

I recently received a text message saying that I had won a $1,000 Best Buy gift card, and to enter a code on a website. I remembered entering some contest a month or two ago on the back of one of my receipts, so I went to this website and entered the code. Then they tried getting me to sign up for some ringtone site that would charge me $9.99 a month. At this point I realized this was a scam, so I ignored it. This is where my complaint seems to differ from all the other complaints I've seen. Later that day I received a call from a man who claimed he was from some company, saying that I was being entered in a contest to win 1 million dollars, for being a prize winner of the Best Buy contest. He asked for information, but it didn't seem important. All he asked was to verify my age, and what type of work I do. He did not ask where I work, just what type of work I do. He then wished me best of luck on the million dollar contest and went to hang up, but I stopped him and asked about the ringtone website that I had to sign up for to receive the $1,000 Best Buy card. He said that he was unsure about the ringtone website, as it was a third party company, and told me that was not required to receive the card. He said that regardless of whether I signed up for the ringtones, I would be receiving an email with a tracking number within a few days, and that the card would be shipped to my house shortly after.
