Charlie Doughtie
Consumer Report

My mother, Julia Hoffman, lived alone and suffered from Alzheimer's. She loved to work in her yard and water her flowers and drew great joy from puttering in her yard and seldom left home. She had been scolded not to drive but we had yet been unable to get her driver's license awhile from her; however, we were working on it. She had been diagonised with Alzheimer's in November.

Charlie Doughtie, obviously had watched my mother while going to and from Kinston on the busy highway. On this particular day, he decides to turn into her driveway with the comment he observers nails backing out of her roof. Her roof is only thirteen years old and her driveway has a no trespassing sign at the entrance of it. Her driveway entry is 200 yards from the road also.

He convinced my mother she needed roof work around her chiminey requiring the flashing to be replaced.instead, the flashing and rain diverter were painted. The flashing and rain diverter were not painted behind the chimney, which you could not see from the ground. He made repairs to the leaking toilet in the guest bathroom. From underneath the house, when the toilet was fluhsed, water poured out of the joint between the toilet flange and the sewer pipe. The toilet flange was not sealed to the sewer pipe. This had to be repaired by a licenced plumber but not before the toilet had emptied underneath the house for several months.

He brought out a few pieces of rotten wood from underneath my mother's home and freightened her. It was then within an hour of being on her property, he was able to write himself a check from her checkbook totaling $3,500.00. On Monday, when he returned, he installled a total of eleven 2x8's - 8 foot sister joist, one 2x4 10 foot sister joist and one piece of R 13 insulation 12 foot long. The materials used by Mr. Doughter to repair the existing floor joist wee not installed per the NC Building code requirements. The joist span in the two sections where the repairs were found is roughly ten feet. The lumber Mr. Doughtie used to sister the existing joist was not long enough to bear on the support ledger on either end; therefore, the sister joist were not supporting the floor load correctly. Also, each 2x8 sister joist had only three to four nails per piece. The insulation installed by mr. Doughtie was the wrong R-Value and did not have any tiger teeth to secure it in place.

Additionally, he came back onto my mother's property, started repairs to a rotten portion of the roof sheathing in the valley of the roof and along the eve of the front of the mobile home belonging to my deceased grandmother's home. On the right side of the mobile home, Mr. Doughtie cut through the roof about two feet up from the eave and from the front porch A roof to the right hand end of the home. He did this without removing any shingles or tar paper. Therefore, he could not judge where to cut the plywood according to the plywood joints, or determine how bad the rot was. Repairs to the mobile home roof were left incomplete, and exposed to the elements. The roof was required to be covered with tarps on a holiday weekend to prevent further damage. Eventually, the mobile home had to be reroofed to finalize the roof repairs started by Mr. Doughtie's crew member Shane Batts and himself. They came onto my grandmother's property unauthorized and as the estate was in probate, my mother was threathend by them if additional payment was not paid for $75.00.

There was no excuse for his actions. I demand justice and a refund from this fraud! This man is not licensed to work on anyone's house. I have a photograph of the 12 boards removed from underneath my mother's home. He is not a licensed contractor and presented himself as a licensed contractor to her. He is a joke and a thief.
