While checking the bill which we really hadn't done for a couple of months we discovered charges for monthly subscriptions to Words/Definition and SMS Joke Alerts. Each was $9.99 plus $0.70 tax. These came from spam text messages. AT&T is going to refund at least this months charges and have put a purchase blocker on our account.
