Back in I received a notification that the storage unit belonging to me was in default status and at risk of having items auctioned. I explained to the company that I had no storage unit and had never put anything into storage. I was told not to worry since it wasn't mine and everything would be auctioned anyway. I was preparing to deploy to Iraq for a year and never heard anything again.
Now in June I've received a letter stating that fees are due on this unit dating back from 2006 and that everything will be auctioned off this July. I called to explain the conversations that took place 6 years ago and was told that the unit was extended as a courtesy to me because of being in the military. There are several issues with this company and their way of doing business.
First they claim that an original driver's license and signature are required in order to rent a unit. I'm being told that it's possible that I rented the unit then forgot about it! I've told them to track who has made payments or see what's in the unit to verify who the owner really is. I questioned if their policy was to verify all documents in order to process a contract, why would they extend a lease another 6 years based on a phone conversation where I told them I was in the military? Where was the verification process then? I never rented a storage unit with them and neither did I request an extension to said unit. This was just a scam on their part to continue ringing up false charges for a unit they should've auctioned off years ago.
I was stationed in NYC until 2000 but have resided in several other states since. Once they finally close this bogus unit, I'll have to spend time and energy to clear my name for a charge that I never made.
