Got a call from and unavailable number claiming to work for the Government giving out grants to people who have no criminal background. The first person had my address and date of Birth as well as my first and last name. She claimed she got the info from Health and Human Services and that they sent out a demographic survey a couple of months ago. She told me I was receiving a government grant in the amount of $2500 and that it is intended to be used for medical, bills, house or debt but not for gambling or alcohol use. She then asked me how I wanted to receive my grant money and I said cash. She gave me an ID number and another number for me to call to find out when I could receive my money through Western Union. I called the other number, gave her my ID number and she too had all of my information. She told me I needed to go to the nearest Western Union and call her back that her name is Tracey. While on the phone she would transfer the money and that we would stay on the phone until I had the money in hand. She then told me to make sure I had my ID with me so it could be proved that I am who I say I am. Then she informed me to make sure I take $290 in cash with me to deposit and that I would get that money and $7,800 back. (Red Flag) Two different amounts have now been mentioned. I told her I didn't have the money and that if I did have it then I obviously wouldn't need the grant money. She informed me that she would put the money on hold and to call her when I had the cash and they would get the money to me.
This needs to be stopped. They are pretending to be a government agency, what's more is that it's health and human services, a place that many of us have used before to receive help for our families, so we want to believe them. I'm glad I paid attention to what they were saying. The number they gave me to call is 202-684-6935.
