I too received a cheque for $3,999 to become a Mystery Shopper. Luckily, being the suspicious person I am, I took the cheque to a branch of the TD Bank (which held the account that the cheque was drawn on). I was told by TD bank that the cheque was "good" but they couldn't cash it for me as I was not their customer. The next day I took the cheque to my bank (Scotiabank) and told them of my dilemma. After informing me that it, more than likely, was a scam, they deposited the cheque into one of my accounts and put a hold on it for 15 days. After about 5 days I was informed that the cheque was indeed - no good.
Thankfully I wasn't charged any NSF charges or returned cheque charges. Lesson learned... If it sounds too good to be true... It very well could be.
