An East-Indian man with a heavy accent called saying he was acting on behalf of Windows, receiving reports from my computer that it had been infected and running slow.
He got me to run some code through DOS prompt, and the computer showed that it was 98.6% infected with viruses and malware. He said his company provided coverage for this type of thing, and walked me through the various packages available.
I chose the "lifetime warranty", that could be transferrable to any new computer I bought that ran a Windows operating system.
I foolishly, without thinking, went through with the payment because I had previously been worried about such malware on my computer, and was honestly a bit glad that I wouldn't have to look around for support, that Windows was serving me well.
The man transferred my to his "supervisor", with an accent that seemed a bit more European, perhaps French, but still with East-Indian hints to it. His English was a bit better an easier to understand.
He walked me through how a tech would be running anti-malware programs on my computer remotely, and I allowed this to happen. I sat an watched while the cursor moved around the screen, downloading various anti-virus and anti-malware programs and running them. They also ran a few de-frag programs.
Honestly, I didn't even think about it being a scam until my wife came home and immediately denounced it as a scam. (I know, it should have been the other way around, very embarrassing). I then did what I should have done first, and simply googled "computer scams". This type of east-asian-employed phone scam was the top hit.
I also should have known better that while support-pc. Eu has not been tagged on sites yet, that I've found, as being a malicious company, the names of numerous other companies were so similar that it's stupid. Of course it's easy for them to put new websites together every day and run the same scam, but through a different name. It's the same concept of the websites set up to offer free t. V and movies illegally: they just keep closing one domain and opening 10 others!
Anyways, this is my rant to hopefully help warn others before they fall so easily into this trap as I have. I demanded my money back, but there is a clause in their phoney little terms and conditions that states that as long as one thing was fixed on your computer, they do not have to refund a single thing. Brutal. Sure, they probably did fix something... Let's say defragged my computer, which it probably needed. So now I can't claim my money back, and what can I do, take them to court?
I'm getting more and more disgusted with the technological age, and it is making want to push technology away and keep my life more simple, and less costly!
