Defective Carpeting

We bought carpeting from LA Carpet made by Shaw Industries. We were told it was extremely durable. We paid approximately $5,000.00 for just less than 1200 sq feet of carpeting. The carpet was installed on 1/10. Around six months later we bagan to notice abnormal abrasion wear. We thought maybe a professional steam cleaning would solve any problems. Weather was too cold until Jan 4 (house is in CA). The professional steam cleaning didn't solve any problems. It still looks horrible. As an aside, there are only two senior citizens living here—no kids.

The fibers are pulling out of the carpet backing. The carpet has lost so many fibers, it lays like corn rows or a tilled farm field. We complained to Shaw. They sent out some "carpet expert" Shaw then sent us a letter telling us to go pound sand. The carpet is barely 1 year old. It looks worse than 15 year old carpet. Footwear tracks everywhere and fibers falling out.

Being an engineer, I took a digital depth gauge and measured a new piece of leftover carpeting. I then measured the badly worn areas around the house. To make the test fair, I first vacuumed the new piece of lefover carpet and the areas of complaint. This will stand the fibers up as high as possible. I did not walk on the areas to be tested before measuring them. The original height of the fibers for the unused carpet was 43/64". The average wear in the defective areas measured 13/64". Shaw says their warranty will cover wear greater than 10%. Clearly, the carpet measurements show the carpet fibers have lost over 50% of original height. Shaw continues to tell us to go pound sand even when I forwarded the measurements and pics.

Don't buy Shaw carpeting or flooring. You'll be sorry. We have filed an action in Small Claims Court.
