After checking with 3 verizon phone employees in early 2010 and thinking carefully about my decision, I decided to drop my Verizon account. I was told I was under no contract or penalty. 2 people told me that I was paid up until Apr 10. I asked the 2nd one to cancel my service as of that date. A few days after cancellation i got another bill. When i called to explain that I didn't owe the money, i was told they always bill 1 month ahead. I talked to severl people including a phone supervisor and they sounded as if they could help me and would pass complaint along. I continued to get bills (only 48.37 but I wasn't going to pay if I was not notified before cancelling service that I was going to be billed for another month.) I contacted the Attny General of my state who wrote that they could not act as personal attny but would write a letter. I also contacted the BBB. Monica Polk of Verizon responded, "We are committed to providing nothing less than superior cellular service to our valued customers." Even though they state when you call in that the phone call may be recorded, whenever I asked them to check phone records to verify that the several people I talked to before cancelling service did not advise me of the billing for following month, this was not done.
I was sent to collection. I called the collection service and asked them why they would waste their time for this small amount as they would pay more than it was worth and i also couldn't understand why V would pursue it as they had probably used more than their resources in doing so that it was worth. It was a matter of principal. The collection agency dropped it. I continued to be billed from V. Finally I was able to speak by phone to a vice president who, it seemed, had trouble believin this could happen. I was told they would drop the issue.
Now after 2 years, I was contacted by another collection agency. I explained that V had probably spent more than 10 times the amount they were trying to collect and I did not understand their motivation and was the collection agency going to waste their resources as well. I don't expect to hear from this collection agency again.
After 2 years without a cell phone, i am ready to get one again but will not use Verizon even though I really liked them when I was their customer.
Verizon stinks.
