Citizen claiming to be a family member, using a marketing cell phone
Consumer Report

Male subject called our residence claiming he was our relative who was coming to visit the following day. Male said he was calling to let us know he was enroute to Sacramento to deliver some checks for the company he worked for. He stated he was in San Diego and would be passing by to visit. The following day he called to get directions to our residence. Few hours later, he called back stating he had been involved in an accident that involved a BMW. He said there was an elderly male who was sick and the female driver and her dad were already on their way out of the state to Mexico to visit family. He said the driver of the other vehicle agreed to make an arrangement of $2200 US dollars to fix her car. The male kept calling and calling, of course us convinced that it was our relative. We advised him we did not have that much money, but that we would call our other relative who lived 2 hours away and maybe she would be able to lend him the money. He advised us to send the money to Zapopan Jalisco MX where the supposed victim was enroute to with her father. While all this is happening, the supposed driver of the other veh who happened to be a female got on the phone several times sounding very concerned about her father. She said she did not want to create any problems so if we would just be able to help out our relative, she would go about her way as soon as the money was sent to MX via Western Union. We unfortunately believed it was our relative, our other relative was able to send the $2200 US dollars via western union to the address given to us. Within the hour, our other relative was able to get the money to the address given. Soon after they called and said the elderly male from the other involved vehicle was at a San Diego hospital and that he had died. So the supposed relative said, but if you send me another $2500 US dollars they'll give the body to the lady and they will be able to fly him to MX and she will be on her way. The female got on the phone again, yelling and crying as if it was true that her father had died. At this point in time I advised the male, that he should notify his father who is my uncle in MX of the situation. He refused and said he did not want to worry my uncle.By this time I realized that everything was a scam. I called my uncle in MX and found out that the supposed male who claimed to be my cousin was not, my uncle advised us that my cousin was working and had never left his city of residence in MX. The male kept calling and calling, but by this point I made a report to the Police Department. Unfortunately, they never made contact with my aunt who sent the $2200 US dollars. Due to the marketing phone used which was a phone listed under the phone scam numbers, the Police Department dispatch advised it would be very difficult to locate the suspects. The Police Dept dispatch also advised me that they had been receiving many scam reports.
