A sales person from this company called me stating that I had qualified for a discount on my subscription for being such a good customer. I already had a magazine service, so I assumed this was the same service. I questioned why he would need my debit card number since they already have it, and he said it was just for verification purposes.
The Next month when I saw that I was being charged for two magazine services, I called the company, and the customer service representative told me that I had to request a cancellation in writing, and that they had actually mailed me a form with my information packet. I never received such a packet or form.
I made 8-9 more phone calls during the next 6 weeks, but could never get a hold of a live person. I left several messages with my request and my information, but of course received no response from the company.
Today I finally talked to a very unhelpful and rude person at the company. She told me that they can't possibly cancel my subscription, and that I still owe them $771, but that they would settle for just $499.00. I explained that I'm not looking for a discount, I don't want their magazines for the next five years, I don't wan't them for even one more month! She stated that I am bound by whatever agreement I supposedly made on the phone with the salesperson who had lied about what they were doing in the first place!
I'm not asking for anything, I simply want to cancel this ridiculous magazine subscription! What do I do? Is getting an attorney my only option?
