Exceptionally poor customer service

I received an I-POD Nano as a gift on 4/3. It was purchased @ the Target store in Clark, NJ. I had previous owned one that was stolen, it was purchase in an Apple store.

The device was defective and there was a terrible reverberation when listening. I first called Apple to find out how to proceed. I was told that this would have to be returned to the store where it was purchased. I also asked that since it would have to be returned if I could upgrade to the classic. Apple said there should be not problem. I went to the Clark store yesterday and spoke with Adam in the electonric department and he agreed that there was a problem with the Nano but, I had to go to custumer service. And I had to discuss the return/upgrade with them. The woman I spoke with (no name tag) took awhile to grap the concept of what I was trying to accomplish. I could do this but, I needed the original receipt. I called my daughter and fortunately she had it. I drove to her home and picked her up just incase she would have to sign any receitps. When I returned, I asked to speak with the same person I had been dealing with but, instead another person brought a message from her. We can only exchange for the same product or give a store credit because the package was opened. I asked her how I would know there was a problem unless I opened the package? There was no response except to repeat the complany policy. I asked to speak with a manager. Nicole (again not name tag) told me that I could upgrade and to go back and have the manager of the department bring up the Classic and she would make the exchange. I went back and Adam then informed me that they did not have any in the store. When I asked why he did not tell me that befor, he claimed he did. I went back to the customer service area and "dicussed" this with Nicole. I told her to give me another Nano and I would just go to another Target to make the exchange/upgrade. She informed me that I could not do that because, she would have to break open the packaging and they would not take it. I then told her to give me a store credit and I would use that at another store and would she please call in the surrounding area to find out which stores had tehm in stock. Unwillingly this was done and she informed me that the "classic" was recalled and would be replaced by another model in the future. At this point just to end the shear torture of dealing with such incompetance, we took a store credit. I have since purchased the Classic I-Pod at an Apple store. The company has NOT recalled any product and at this time has no plans to replace this product.

This was customer service at it's worst. The annoyance that was convayed by the employees was amazing considering your call you customers "guests".
