A friend of mine received a letter from Regional Management & Consumer Research Inc. It stated that she had been "selected to participate in a paid Consumer Research Program." She was supposed to call Mike Anderson at 1-403-926-6055 and be told of how to do her job and have her check they sent for $2,285.12 activated. The check seems real and is from "Regional Management, Inc." and is from the bank PNC Bank, N.A.
She was supposed to deposit the check and then use it to buy $50.00 of goods from Walmart and $50.00 from Kmart or JC Penney, then wire transfer $1,750.00 through Western Union. She was also supposed to fill out a "Customer Service Evaluation form" to rate these companies on how well they did.
Thankfully, she didn't buy into the scam and asked me to check it out first. The company "Regional Management, Inc." is a legit company in Baltimore, but there is no "Consumer Research" part in the name and they seem to be a realty company. Not only that, but I checked the phone number on the letter using the reverse whitepages and it turns out that it originates in Canada, not Baltimore. When I called Regional Management in Baltimore, they said that they are aware of this scam and that it is being investigated. Apparently someone is using their company name to scam people and they are not part of it.
