I went into Hobby Lobby, store #225, to exchange and purchase some items this afternoon. After browsing I saw the Zebra Rolling Tote pictured above and thought this would be a great purchase since I am a Special Education Teacher, and am constantly bringing things back and forth.
On the sign in front of the display where this tote was it said “Craft Totes from 19.99-49.99.” I was very excited and was going to purchase it. On the other side of the display there were more totes and their tags said “Scrapbooking Totes from 19.99 to 89.99.”
On the tote that I was going to purchase (above) its actual tag said “craft tote”, not “scrapbooking craft tote.” I proceeded to check out with my items and the tote rang up as $89.99; therefore I asked the cashier to check the price and she still came up with $89.99. I brought her the two display signs and she said it was an error. I asked her if I could speak to the manager. She pointed to him and I asked him if I could show him the display and the discrepancies. As we were walking to the display he said this happens all the time. I showed him the two different signs and tags on the tote. He said that the tote was still $89.99. I told him that this was false advertising due to the sign, placement of the totes, and the actual tag on the tote. He asked me “What do you want me to do about it because I am not giving you it for $49.99.” I told him thatI wanted to make him aware that this is false advertising and it would be nice if he would honor the price. He said “no, I can’t do anything.” I told him I was very disappointed by his choice. He replied “What do you want me to do about it? ” I asked him to give me Corporate or Customer Services number. He complied then started walking ahead of me towards the heck out counter, as he was walking he stopped in a few aisles to put things that were in carts away instead of going straight to the register. I told him that I would meet him at the register. He cam back with a piece of paper (if needed, I will scan to you) with the number 745-1100 and underneath it he wrote, “ADVERTISING.” He then said they (Customer Service) would not be in until Monday. I said thank you and he walked away laughing.
Instantly, when I got in my car I called the number. I was shocked and disappointed to find out that the number the manager gave me was to a local Carson Pirie Scott Store.
After I looked online, I found the actual Customer Service number for Hobby Lobby and left a message.
I am very disappointed at the way DJ treated me. I am a 27 year old Special Education Teacher and I live in the area. My co-workers and family constantly go to that Hobby Lobby. I truly feel that DJ treated and discriminated against me because I am a young woman. If my mother or husband went in and had this issue, I do not think DJ would have spoken to them or treated them that way; the situation would have probably been handled differently. I can’t believe that a manager of a store would ever treat anyone like that. Throughout my whole conversation with DJ I was very professional and pleasant because I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated.
I told my father about the situation and he called the number DJ gave me and was very upset that a manager would do that. My father called DJ, and told him that he would like Customer Service’s real number, and that he would contact the Better Business Bureau and make a formal complaint if he does not give the real number since this is his duty as a manager.
I am writing to tell you how sad and disappointed I am over the way DJ, as a manager, handled this situation. I feel that he treated me poorly and was very disrespectful, when I was not at fault nor did I argue with him. I would hate to pursue this further, however I would like to speak to someone regarding this situation.
