I have been fighting a 2005 and 2006 CA state audit for over a year. When I contacted TAXBRAIN for their assistance... I was told that the Franchise Tax Board was correct in the amount they were auditing for. Due to the way I answered one question in the online guided preparation... Not being a cpa, it wasn't a red-flag to me. And the system never red-flaged the error.
I faxed everything over to TaxBrain, as they have "audit insurance" should a mistake be made, they will pay the audit.
That didn't happen... I was told, it was user error... It wasn't their fault that I didn't understand their prompt, and they can't be held responsible for that.
Even the tech I spoke with today, understood why I'd answered the question that way... But there was nothing he could do, because it was my fault for not understanding it the way it was meant to...
So... in short, I've since used TURBOTAX for the and 2009 tax returns... With no problem. Their software is much easier to use, and they stand behind their software, unlike TaxBrain. I made the same mistake 2 years in a row... Because of how the question read... And I strongly recommend they revamp their program to be more user-friendly... Or risk losing all their business to TurboTax. I will be filing formal complaint against TaxBrain regarding this... But I'm posting this message to hopefully save someone else from having the same experience.
