Target Superstore
Motorized shopping carts for the disabled

TARGET is a large store, too large for someone who is afflicted with any type of joint replacement problems or arthritis to be able to push a cart and shop. I am compelled to use their motorized carts, which most of the time run out of power halfway through my shopping or simply do not start at all because none of their personnel bother to plug them in for recharging overnight. Not only are they often out of power, when they do move, they are so slow it takes over an hour and a half to go from one end of the store to the other, and the hand controls are so difficult to grip that someone with arthritis cannot squeeze the controls without having to take pain pills before shopping. WAL MART, on the other hand, has old-looking carts, but in contrast to those of Target, WalMart's carts go at a good rate of speed and are easy on the hands. I tried unsuccessfully to complain to Target over the years, but was rudely told that they did not have to provide any motorized carts for their shoppers at all. There are more and more of us baby boomers who value out independence and are the ones spending the money in their stores for both groceries as well as clothing, etc. Because we can't go store-hopping and need a place to shop both for groceries as well as dept. Store type items. Too bad TARGET's management is so short-sighted they fail to realize that they would make a great deal more money providing decent, easy to ride carts for their older customers rather than presenting their "Like it or lump it!" attitude to our complaints about accessibility. As it is, I am too worn out by the slow and difficult carts (even when I can find one powered up) which are provided by Target to make my purchases all in one trip. Generally I give up about halfway through, sometimes even foregoing some items I need or may wish to browse through for ideas, but haven't time or strength to search for using their energy-draining and inefficient motorized carts. My complaints to management on this issue have all fallen on deaf ears and been rudely rebuffed. I wouldn't go there at all if I didn't look forward to having a Starbuck's frappucini at the end of the trip.
