I got my first phone call in July telling me my husband had, two years earlier, agreed to a two year internet business directory listing, and now it was time to pay. Tired, and unaware at the time of this scam, after explaining I couldn't afford the $700 they asked, I made the mistake of agreeing on tape to pay a 'reduced' fee of $399. They said when I got the invoice and paid it the account would be closed.
Upon thinking about it later I realized it had to be a scam. They had my husband's name wrong, he is not part of my business and would never agree to anything without my approval, and finally, at the time the original alleged agreement took place he was recovering from a stroke, and could barely talk or walk or think. He certainly wasn't answering phone calls.
When I confronted them, demanding to hear the alleged tape of the original agreement, the service rep smugly told me that now that they had me on tape agreeing to pay they didn't have to prove anything, and refused to play the (non-existent) tape.
I have submitted online complaints to the FTC and BBB, and tomorrow my official complaint to the NY AG office goes in the mail. Unfortunately, slimes that they are, these scammers will probably just disappear and reappear under a new name, and more naive business owners will get caught in their web.
