Fall 2008. Finally a college gradt. Got my bachelors. Went online. Found a marketting job in the city on career builders..
I thought I was in luck when i immedietely received a phone call. They told me to come in to their midtown manhatten location dressed professionally. As a gullible, stupid, naive, college grad, i thought that I was about to start a new life working in the city. Went in to an interview. Saw an attrctive brunette sitting on a computer. The place looked really tiny. There were only tw. Flirted with her. Specifically asked her if there is a base or its all commission. She replied "you will have to ask them."
Suddenly I went into the office. A balding Africa American male gave me a short interview. I told him about my acheivemen, internships, my activities in college. He seemed impressed. He seemed to be a well educated, smart guy too, so I felt that this company was legitimate. He told me that they'll only call only a few of the interviewees. Between 5:45-6:00.
At 5:58 I got a call. They played it right. I was selected for a second round. Wow... A job in the greatest city in the world. I was big time NOW. Unfortunately, the second interview, I'd learn what this really is.
On the day of observation, i was to shadow a nice blond girl. I walked in humid er weather in a suit giong door to door trying to sell verizon products. Only 1/8 people would eventually choose to "upgrade" their account. This was because my interviewer was a great liar.
Lunch time comes. I learn that this is all commission. I was like "ooohh noo".. But she cheered me up, and told me that I'll be making about 700-1000 a week. Not bad. Right!? Well if i knew any better, i'd know that nobody with a bachelors degree should ever accept a job thats all commission.
After this, I was to meet the manager of the actual branch. His name was Bart Yates. Tall, pale, ghastly looking fellow who is about nothing but lies. He told me that this wasn't a salesman job, and he was looking for managers. *the sad truth is, they'd hire anybody that walks in... EvEN IF YOU DIDNT sPEAK ENGLISH! I mean come on, how r u supposed to sell EFFICIENTLY, or be part of a team. Well they have 0 investment in u, so it really doesn't matter.,!! 1st week: $120 for transportation and food. Got $0.
3rd week: Spent $150, beacsue I needed to dry clean my shoes. Got $0.
4rth week: was pay day week. According to calculations I was to get around $600 for the 3 weeks worth of work. I made night club reservations, called up my friends, and was ready to celebrate. Got my pay check. $125. Cydcor applications sometimes get rejected two weeks after your sale. This means that you don't get any commission. Even though both verizon and cydcor do.
I kept on going like this. Losing money week after week, based on the promise that I will eventually start making money once I get good. I was brainwased by manager bart yates. He'd say stupid speeches everyday on how this job is for those who want to be entrepeneurs, and if you dont like doing door to door sales, u'll just be another corporate drone who never makes it big. I was stupid enough to believe this. Want to kill myself now. How many leaders or entrepoeneurs out there, started out by ripping off people giong door to door. This man, is a great intelligent liar, because he uses people ignorance and ambition to make a sales team. Its all about quantity not quality for him.
The moral of the story is. Don't believe anything this man bart yates says. This goes out to all you college graduates who worked hard for your degree and dreaming about a job in the city. Don't make the same mistake i did. You deserve a real job. These pepple will take anyone, and they wil lie to you. If you need money, work in mcdonalds before this place. This isn't a legitimate company. Good luck..
