Subsidiary Of Cydcor Scam for recent grads... Stay away!

First of all, let's just say I'm glad I decided not to take this job. I learned a lesson here to do this type of research before applying to companies that I'm not familiar with.

I am a recent college grad who can't wait to get a steady full-time job. With the economy the way it is, I am willing to think a little 'outside the box' about possible career paths. As I've been sending off resumes over the past several weeks, something possessed me to send one to these clowns at Marketing FX.

It was just this past Sunday (6/28/09) when I sent it. Just about 24 hours later, I get a phone call from "MKTNG FIRM THE", as it said on my Caller ID. Turns out this was Marketing FX, who I had just applied to the previous day. This struck me as kind of odd, as companies often take weeks to sort through resumes to determine who their best candidates are. Despite this, I still went along with this phone call.

I spoke to a woman named Mary, apparently the hiring manager of the place. This was the same person that the job search website listed under contact information. I found it interesting that it did not display her last name.

Mary went on wondering if I could come in the next day for an interview. This would not work for me, as I had to go to work at my current job during typical business hours that next day. After convincing her that Tuesday would not work, she suggested I come in on Wednesday. I agreed to this, as I did not have to work on this day. When asked about the meeting time, I said that I didn't have a strong preference for a particular time, so she put me in at 1:45 PM (seemed like a pretty 'random' time). She then gave me the office address and contact info and told me to bring in two copies of my resume. Also, she would send me a confirmation email about our interview. The deal was done.

Shortly thereafter, I receive this email:

*
[My name here],

We are on for 1:45 PM 7/1.

Please remember that dress is business professional, bring 2 copies of your resume, and leave yourself plenty of time to get here (the Rosemont area can be a little crazy with traffic at any random time). For more information about our company feel free to check out our website at www.marketingfx.org.

Our interview availability is limited; therefore we have a strict rescheduling policy. You'd be surprised how many times a day we hear about various exotic illnesses, flying over handlebars of bicycles, getting hit in the head with a kite. I think you get the point.

We are located across from the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in the Columbia Center Building #2. You will find our exact address listed below.

We are looking forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Mary Dyrhaug

The paragraph detailing the crazy excuses particularly stuck out at me.

I was now having some suspicions about this company and how it may not be a good place to work. The job description on the website seemed pretty vague, and I was wondering if it would just be a bunch of telemarketing, which I would NEVER want to do. (Turns out, it's door-to-door, which is basically the same thing in my book).

I told myself that I would at least get some interview experience, and I would still not have to take the job, even if the interview was successful. I then did my 'research' on this company through numerous Google searches. I ran across this website. I decided that night that I would cancel my interview and not waste any more time with these creeps. This morning I sent an email back to Mary saying that I would be "pursuing other opportunities", and that the deal was off.

Let's see what happens tomorrow at 1:45 if they still call me, asking me where the hell I am...
