Received notification letter stating I won $255,069.00 in a sweepstake draw, along with a check in the amount of $4,725.12

I am a law clerk for a law firm, and one of our clients has received a letter from Reader's Digest notifying her that she is a winner of a sweepstake draw that was held on May 21. The letter stated that she has been approved to receive a lump sum payout of $255,069.00 in cash credited to file reference number A974-K309.in addition to the letter, she also received a Safeco Insurance Company check in the amount of $4,725.12.

The letter requested that our client contact Paul Gilane or Rhonda Arwood at 1-778-316-3115, in order to activate her claim, before she deposited the check in her bank. The letter was signed Ben Walsh, Prize Disbursement.

I contacted Reader's Digest Customer Service Department and was told that the letter received by our client was not valid.

I am posting this Report in an effort to help other victims of this scam, and also to try to find out some information in order to better help our client.

If there is anyone who has received a similar letter and deposited the check and would be willing to relate your experience, please post a response to this report to let me know what has happened to you since.

Thank you!
