The California National Guard under Col. Sylvia R. Crockett's direction discharged
a brain injured National Guard Soldier. The Soldier, CPL Gary L. Pifer 1/18 Cav 40th BCT, was injured during a work detail, carrying a heavy metal desk down a flight of stairs. CPL Pifer fell 4 steps and the desk landed on his back.
Returning from Active Duty, CPL Pifer requested medical care and disability pay from the National Guard. CPL's Pifer requests were denied.instead Col. Crockett
issued orders back dating his discharge by 9 months in a attempt to hold the California National Guard, non-responsible for his injuries. Cpl Pifer's TBI, Traumatic
Brain Injury was diagnosed by the V.A. Since his injuries happened on State National Guard time. He can not by law receive V.A. Disability benefits and
has to pay the Veterans Administration for his medical care. Cpl Pifer is currently in dire straights and his home is in the foreclosure process.
