Two months ago I saw that Stamps.com had attempted (I was at my limit) to charge me 17.99 for an unrequested service. I'd never been to this site before, so I knew this was wrong. I also never sign up for free trials of services, so I knew it wasn't something like that either. I contacted American Express and they assigned me a new card and number. I received the card, but did *not* activate it, as it was at the limit anyway.
A month later I was reviewing my statement and saw that I'd been charged 17.99 two months in a row (once my balance had dropped low enough, they got a charge through using the old number). More disturbing is that they charged me under my *new* card number, which I had not activated. How is this possible except through illegal means? I contacted Amex immediately and filed a dispute and they are contacting Stamps.com and have credited me back the money plus interest.
They are also sending me another new card, though I am concerned they will continue to try and charge me given this has not stopped them before. Mainly, I am concerned because I don't know how they got my card in the first place, and then got the number to my unactivated card the second time around! I will be keeping a close eye on all my accounts until I'm sure this has been resolved.
