Area Circulation
Lied to me

My title to this report seems a little harsh at first glance, but thats exactly what has happened between me and Area Circulation. Within the first month of their first contact with me I was attempting to cancel everything and get out.

The person that I talked to, I'm not sure if they were customer service or a sales person, said that I can't cancel under any circumstances. Which is obviously untrue from what I've read here at this particular site. My specific problem with this company is how they attempt to deal with situations by just lengthening the time the customer, me, has to pay them.

At first I continued to ask for a cancellation instead of a smaller monthly payment, and delays on payment, but they made me believe that that was the best they could do and that I verbally agreed to honor the payments. At first I thought I was screwed to getting tons of magazines in the mail that i never ordered or wanted, which is another complaint I have against them.

I'm a college student who works full time now, a situation that has changed my amount of leisurely reading time, and I find it frustrating to keep paying Area Circulation when I don't read what they send (this is mostly because they dont send the ones I order but the "free promotional magazines" like parenting and better homes and gardens), and I found it unbelievable that a such a company can exist. A company that sells magazine subscriptions for 5 years but doesnt have a cancellation clause, even though their own agents told me it wasnt a contract.

They told me it wasnt a contract so that means I should be able to cancel, call me stupid I guess. If some company is trying to hold me to a non-contractually binding obligation to continue payments on something I no longer want need or more importantly dont have the time and patience to continue with then I have a huge problem.

I'm no lawyer, but doesnt that seem like, i dont know the word for it, illegal? I mean if you say one thing (this is not a contract) and then say another thing (you cant cancel, you agreed on the phone) which one am i supposed to believe? If the person who responds for this company is still around I'd like a response ASAP.
