I received a voice mail on my cell phone on 12/20/08 from American Express regarding changes to my account, for which I had to call them back to get the details. When I called, I was told that my AMEX Gold would be declined from making further purchases until I paid my current bill. That would be understandable if I was past due on my account, however, the payment is not due until 12/30.
When I asked why they are taking this tactic, I was told that it was because of the balances I am carrying on that card as well as an AMEX Blue Card I have. The representative then asked me at least three times if I wanted to pay the bill today over the phone so that I could continue to use my card. I told her I would have it paid by its due date.
I have been an account holder since 1990 and have never heard of such a thing being done by AMEX. Is this a new policy and what can be done about it?
