I recieved a letter that came by U.S. Mail stating I am a Readers Digest 3rd Prize Winner of $100,000.00. The letter also included a very real looking check pay to the order of Rosemary Smith for $3100.75 written off of National City Bank stating it is coverage for insurance, handling, duty and taxes fees which I am advised not to use for anything personal and that the afore mentioned fees will be entirely covered by Reader's Digest Corporate Claims Services. They give a ref# which you are to call a number on the letter to get check validated and to recieve winnings by certified cashier's check within 24hrs. I called the number and when I asked questions the man on the line seemed to get annoyed with me so I hung up.in this time of economic crisis I really am very angry about this because as much as I can use a windfall such as this, had I not questioned the legitimacy of this so called "prize" I would no doubt be in a far worser situation.
Needless to say there are many out there in similar financial crisis who unfortunately may not know to ask questions and will or have fallen prey to this kind of scam. I really wish there was a way to turn the tables on these predators so they could be beaten at their own game. If there was some way to take these checks and cash them at the scammers loss, it would no doubt stop this horrible scam.
