I recently moved to Sparks, NV 2 months ago, after 1 month of job searching I finally found a temporary job. Not much, but it was a start and I was able to pay my bills, so when I saw the Internet add for 2000$ a month I had to check it out-mistake! I called J&L Distributing and immediately set up an interview that same day. Of course I went and during the interview I was told about some the potential and benefits with working there, and it never dawned on me to ask, Are we getting paid? Who would think to ask if a job will pay me. But I did explain to my interviewer - Paula - that I am already working and will have to quit my current job to work there and with that she was fine, still did not inform me that this is a commission only job. I also asked the million dollar question, What will I be doing (the ad says customer service and setting up displays), seems easy. I was assured there was no selling involved and that I would be setting up janitorial supplies, seems easy, I would be making at least 2000$ a month - I thought. I was hired later that evening by my interviewer-Paula. I was excited to have a job making more and I was eager to start. My first day and only day in training I listened to Paula go on and on about her life and how selling Kirby's put her in a better position financially and it sounded alright, but the whole time I am sitting there (12-5pm) I figured I was getting paid-Wrong! After the class we were told to call in and see if we satisfied Paula enough to return, as if they are doing us a favor. When I called in I spoke to Cameron and I asked about filling out our employment paperwork and that's when I found out we were not being paid. I held my anger and words to myself because I wanted to speak with Paula because she was the one I communicated with from the start. Needless to say I called back 20 mins later and I got Paula, I was not rude, loud or disrespectful (and it was very hard at that time) and I asked her why she did not tell me the training wasn't paid and she told me she did not go over any of the pay therefore she feels she was right, and in order to make money for training I need to set up appointments with friends and family... I just moved here and my main focus is getting a job, not hanging out and making friends. Therefore, unless I don't care about getting paid, I would have to go door-2-door while transporting this Kirby door-2-door. Where does the customer service come in at, these are not customers, they are unsuspecting Nevadans being solicited during their time at home. So I decided to pass and I did not return, but thanks to J & L Distributing I am no longer have a paying job.
Don't get me wrong, I am sure there is money in selling Kirby's. But I should not of been lied to and it is MY decision to sit in a class and not get paid, not Kirby representative Paula's decision. And further more, if the Kirby company doesn't care anything about the people they so-call "Hire" I am sure once you become Kirby customer and shell out 2500$ or add in another drawn out bill, that the customer service and attention will be faulty as well.
I wonder why the makers and owners of Kirby allow this to go on and don't hold contractors responsible for their shady business practices.?!
