The Utopia cafe is a complete joke. I started working there 6 months ago, and let me tell you... It was the longest six months of my life.
The owners befriend you immediately. They make you feel like family for the most part. They introduce you to their kids, tell you about the pets they own, even the color of their house! Everyday they take you out for drinks... For dinner... And tell you all about their personal life.
Too much!
But I was won over by them, as any new employee would be. They are charming and easy to talk to. And as I found out later, complete 'pathological liars, ' or to be more descriptive..."SOCIOPATHS!"
I can't even count the number of lies Valerie (one of the owners), told me! She told everyone that she had a heart attack, which was an obvious lie. I found out that it was a myth when I asked her what kind of damage had been done. She replied, "None! They actually don't have a clue what happened to me!" B.S.! Are you kidding me? A heart attack is a very serious thing, and you just f*&^%$# lied about that? Really?
Then things began to get really weird. She started lying about stuff that didn't even matter! One day after I got off of work, she told me that one of kitchen workers said to her, "Oh wow, Lindsay isn't even sweating! I mean, look at all of us! We are soaked! How is that even possible?" I confronted him the next day and he had no idea what I was talking about! SO WEIRD!
Sorry to ramble, but what I really wanted to say is this: Isn't it illegal to never get your paychecks on time? Because not once did I ever get paid on time! Never! None of us did! I would like to point out that there were only 3 employees! How hard is it to flippin' call in 3 time cards? NOT HARD! Hell, I even offered to do it for them! But for some odd reason we were constantly having to ask for our paychecks! This is why I am complaining! My husband had to call and ask for my paycheck, and then when we went to get it the owner wanted to meet US at a bar (the paychecks were already a day late!).
We agreed and met her at a local watering hole. While sitting with her, and paying for her 4 glasses of chardonnay, she received a phone call. Who was on the other end? The other owner, who had the rest of the employees asking him for their paycheck, which the female owner had. Being that she was at the bar and didn't feel like taking them over to the place (it was a 7 minute drive), she lied and told people that she was 40 minutes away. What the hell? One of the guys in the kitchen has 3 freakin' kids! Give him his paycheck on time!
Anywho, to cut this ramblin rod of a story short, boycott the Utopia Cafe. 3308 SE Belmont Portland, Oreogn 97214
