Scam took back check and when called wanted money to insure check

I received a check in the mail for the amount of $4990.00 from this alleged company and went to the bank to deposit it. My family and myself decided with all the bad luck we've had somebody up there noticed and decided to give us a break.

Well I called the number on the letter, according to the instructions and spoke to a Fred Johnson. Mr. Johnson then told me to deposit the check and take out the amount of $3150.00 and go to Western Union and send the amount of $2999.00 to this address-Alison Ronald, 4522 Kings Hwy, Bklyn., N.Y. 11234. He explained the reason for the difference was the cost of sending it by W.U. Then he told me to call him once I got the confirmation # for the money sent.

So we were as you can guess extremely happy. Well, when I deposited the check, the bank rep said I would have to wait 10 days for it to clear. Okay, so I've been checking my account 2x's daily, because sometimes checks clear sooner. Well I went into my account today 07/17/08 and I see all this action on my account, which I could not account for. So I call my bank to find out why my account was in the negative, which they nicely explained.
It seems the check for $4990.00 was returned to sender for NSF and I was charged for $10.00 to pay for their check.

So I decided to call Homestyle Trust and find out what was going on. Mr. Johnson came on, and when I told him what happened. He said to me that because the insurance on the check was not payed they had to pull the check back. Then he told me that if I sent him $750.00, that would pay for the insurance and the check would clear. I told him that I had spoken with a few people that know about grants and that I did not have to pay any money to receive a grant, especially if I was "awarded" said grant. He went on to say that "this is not an American company" so things were different. That's when I told him I don't think so, wished him a good day, and hung up. This is when I decided to find out how I can help prevent this from happening to others like myself.
I understand I fell for this, but when you're on your "last legs" so to speak and you're praying for a sign, or any kind of good luck to happen for you and yours, you sort of start to believe in almost anything. This seemed so official and realistic that it became believable in our eyes, don, t let it happen to you. Believe me, it breaks your heart, when you think you're so smart, and you get duped. Now I, m back to square one, and I haven't stopped praying for me and mine. Before I forget, the back of the letter looks real official, with the logos of some of the biggest businesses in this country as so-called "Donors", and a statement by the senders saying, "Important notice: This grant is a prize you won; it is not a loan and does not require repayment and you do not need to own a home to be eligible for this grant. This notification letter is very confidential and it must be kept at home at all times, lost or stolen must be reported to the issuing company within 24 hours. Please Note: you must call to activate your check before cashing."
