On August 5 I was on my property when Duane Green, a contrctor, drove up his truck and asked me if I wanted my driveway to be paved. After having his worker measure my driveway, he quoted me a cost of $4,240 and said that he would need a deposit of $2,000 to buy materials. I gave him a check for $2000 and he said that he would want the balance in cash when the job was completed. I told him that I would not have that amount of money in cash. Several weeks went by and my driveway was not done. After numerous attempts to reach him by cell phone (570-269-8932), he finally answered on September 3. When I questioned him about his failure to honor our contract, he transferred me to his voice mail. I then went to one of the neighbor's to inquire about Mr. Green. She said the cost for her driveway was $3,000 with only a $300 deposit—her driveway is larger then mine! Upon reviewing my contract at that time, I realized that it stated $300 deposit, half the balance at start of job and balance due upon completion—whyn then was I charged $2000 upon signing? At one point I saw him working at one of the neighbors and I approached him, demanding my money back or the work done. He responded "You Black people want things free, go back home" He stepped up to my face, made jeering/mocking sounds and told me to "Go back to Jamaica. My neighbor yelled at him to stop.
My neighbors have informed me that they have seen his equipment on my property and thought that he was there doing my driveway—nothing could be further from the truth. He has used my property as a convenient place to park while he worked on other driveways. When I got home, there were soda cans, cigarette butts, and globs of asphalt in my driveway, causing my home to be an eye sore within my neighborhood.
Because of Duane Green's unlawful deception, outright thievery and egregious racial prejudice, I have been publicly humiliated, defrauded of $2,000 and made a fool of.
I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and Bureau of Consumer Protection, with absolutely no resolution to date. What Duane Green has done is deplorable, unconscionable and deserves the full punishment of the law. He had defrauded me of my dignity and my money and I am sure that I am not the only person to whom he has done this. He needs to be stopped!
