Culver Careers - Bobby Hunt - Tracy Billups Bait and switch, deceptively lure you in for undersireable opportunities

CulverCareers is a recruiting company for sales professionals. Their job is to get you in for a first interview to get to know what jobs you are interested in applying for, and shop you around to multiple companies. However, their tactics seem to be a little deceptive. Most of their ads will appear on regular job boards such as monster.com. As former recruiter myself, I am aware of what techniques required to get someone in for an interview. This particular branch of CulverCareers is located in the same plaza as The Block of Orange.

First, they try to catch your eye with a position you want. For example, lets say you are looking for a position in Medical Sales. They will post an ad for Medical Sales Representative, Orange County, CA. You think to yourself, "they must have a position available". So you send in your resume.

Second. The next day you receive a call. I was called by Bobby Hunt, Corporate Recruiter. His job is to "close you" on coming in for the preliminary interview. Now on the phone, first thing he is trained to say is "Are you looking for something only in the Medical Sales field, or would you be looking for something a little more lucrative?" The Question is obviously designed for the candidate to say "yes", because everyone should be interested in a "more lucrative" position. He asks what dates you are available to interview. If you say Thursday or Friday, he will automatically go with Thursday because he doesn't want you to lose the impulse to come in or accept another position.

3rd.in person interview on site. You come in looking business professional. However they are very casual in the office. They wear jeans and a nice button up dress shirt, untucked. A little weird for the candidate to be wearing a full suit, being interviewed by a guy in jeans. Anyways, they sit you down, throw some generic interview questions at you. So the breakdown goes, like this. He will tell you we have a Medical Sales Position with Becky's Medical Sales, but they just closed (even though Becky's Medical Sales website had positions just posted on their website the day before), He will then say we have payroll sales position, communication sales position, and another position and he set up your interviews as soon as next week. However, those other sales positions are EXTREMELY entry level. Meaning 30K base pay. Now looking at the internet, its pretty easy to find entry level sales positions at 30k base pay without anyones help. And in the meantime, its doubtful that the original Medical Sales Position was even available in the first place, even though it was posted on monster.com and their own website.

So, Bobby will look for positions for you. However, if he can't "close you" on one of their job openings, your paperwork gets passed up to a real "closer". Tracy Billups, Managing Director. She will call you a few weeks later and ask if you have found a position.in this particular instance, she told me the company I had accepted employment with was not a reputable company and that I had not made a wise decision. Whether that be true or not, the manner in which she said it was a little insulting and disrespectful. She also asks if you are looking for something only in the medical sales field or if you are willing to look at "a more lucrative position". Sounds just like Bobby Hunt, so I am assuming they were both trained well. She then says that they have the original medical sales position that you were originally looking for and that she would get back to you. After sending an email, and leaving a message, she does not reply.

Overall, if you are looking to break into sales or are just too lazy to look for positions on your own, CulverCareers may be able to help. However, if you are experienced, they seem to only have entry level positions available which you could probably save time and get on your own anyways. I feel that they pull the "bait and switch", by posting ads on job boards that don't exist to you get you in for the interview, and then offer you a bunch of entry level bullshit and hope you bite. If you are looking for a "more lucrative position", I doubt CulverCareers is the way to go.
