On April 2nd I received an invoice in the mail from Prevention magazine -for $21.79 due April 9th. It was for 12 issues of the magazine. The invoice informed me that the magazine would be arriving in a few days. Two days later, the magazine was delivered.
Here's why I smell a scam:
(I'll be detailed in hopes that it will help others to identify the scam if faced with any of the same experiences)
Two weeks ago I got a very suspicious call from a telemarketer. He did not sound professional at all - on the onset, he called out my first name as if he were a long lost friend. He said that he had some magazine prescriptions for me and wanted to know if I was still living at my current address. I asked him what magazines were the prescriptions for. He then told me that he did not know! He said he did not have that information before him. I then told that I did not want them, and to cancel the prescription.
At that point, he very abruptly hung up the phone. It was them that I smelled a scam!
So when I received the invoice in the mail - I goggled magazine scams and sure enough - there were MANY complaints about this company in the same manner. I notice that their requests for cancellations have been ignored by Prevention Magazine, and they are receiving very threatening letters from North Shore Agency collections co.
I am sending the invoice and the magazine back with a letter demanding cancellation and pray that I too do not have to go through a long battle with this company (like those I've read about). I will not give $21.97 to this Prevention Magazine scam!
I used to have great respect for this magazine when I glanced it in the stores. I even picked one up several times while in the grocery check-out line. Now I will never read another article from this magazine again. Respect Lost!
Something MUST be done about this!
