Vector Marketing, AKA CUTCO did not provide leads, forced me to purchase expensive knives and then provided no promised support

I came to Vector Marketing after seeing an ad on my school campus that I would be able to earn over $12/hour, which seemed like an excellent deal as I was struggling working part-time retail at the time. I came to their office and met the very charismatic regional manager, Adam, who assured me that they only hired a few applicants but that they would consider my application. I should have been a little suspicious when both myself and the other applicant there at the time were hired and invited to training a few days later.

During training, we were the subject of marketing. We were told that we would be provided support by our local office if we decided to join the program, and we would be provided with leads; also that it was as simple as showing a horde of undoubtedly sympathetic people a short presentation. They assured us that, if we didn't make any sales, we'd still receive a small paycheck comparable to what I was used to getting on a weekly basis. They then let us know that we would need to buy a set of knives—at a greatly reduced rate, of course. Whereas our customers would be paying at least 500 or 600 dollars for a set of knives, we would only pay $128. With the promise that I would earn the money back very quickly, I ponied up and got started with the program.

At the time, I decided to retain my part-time job with the local Wal-Mart; however, due to sales meetings that I was required to attend and incessant pressure from my boss, I almost immediately quit my real job. It was then that I discovered that a) I would be provided with absolutely no leads and given the flimsiest excuses for the lies that had been provided and b) it would be very difficult to find "qualified" customers who would actually let me give my presentation. This coupled with the fact that there were around 10 other reps all working the same areas made this a very difficult prospect.

The long and short of the story is that I was unable to pay my rent or my utilities while making absolutely no money, and I was forced to move back home while looking for a new job—I was forced to abandon my college education at the University of Missouri and return to Arkansas, with a very newly pregnant wife in tow. If I remember properly, I was paid roughly $70 for at least 100 hours of work over a 6-week period. I consider this outrageous, and I would like to warn other students across the nation that Vector Marketing is only interested in using them as the lowest stones in a mean-spirited pyramid scheme.
